1. Describe the hero's journey.
The hero's journey is filled with obstacles leading to happiness. The hero's journey has easy and difficult decisions. Sometimes the hero has to give up something they love for the better.
2. Describe the attributes of a hero
A hero has courage inside of them. A hero sacrifices a lot to help others. A hero can be good or bad as long as they do the right thing.
3. Assess the protagonist of your novel as a hero OR and an "anti-hero"
We believe that Tim O'Brien is the anti-hero because he threw away all of his ambitions. He accepted himself as a coward and went to war. He made a lot of sacrifices by accepting he was a coward. He tells stories to keep the war and other dead people and memories alive.

1. Describe the hero's journey.
Holden's journey is not exactly a typical story book hero journey. He doesn't fight villains and save or protect people. Although he does run into problems that would be challenging for a simple human. Holden was by himself in the world and for someone his age, he did a very good job of surviving. He might not have made the best decisions but he always ended up doing what was right.
2. Describe the attributes of a hero.
A hero is someone that does good for others and doesn't expect anything in return. A hero is someone that people can look up to and idolize. Heroes aren't perfect and they make mistakes but they always end up doing the right thing.
3. Assess the protagonist of your novel as a hero OR an "anti-hero."
We believe that Holden is an anti-hero. Most people's first impression of Holden definitely wouldn't be "hero." He drinks and smokes and gets kicked out of school and doesn't go home. But, he has a kind heart and is very generous. For example, he doesn't like the church sisters that walk around with a basket asking people for donations, but he still donated money to the church anyway. And he said that he wasn't going to go home but in the end he did the right thing and went home.

1. Describe the hero's journey
Swoops in, saves the damsel in distress from evil, collects his reward from the King, a declares it "all in a days work." It is a bit cliche. (ooo vocab word!!)
2. Describe the attributes of a hero
(usually being a guy) He is all good, and no evil. He stands for truth, justice, and all that is righteous.
3. Assess the protagonist of your novel as a hero or and an "anti-hero"
The protagonist of the novel "The Things They Carried" is Tim O'Brien. He can be consider an anti-hero, as he is a solider thrown into the atrocities of war. In the book he is partly displayed as a sane, caring, and pacifistic person. However, the book also shares his fears and flaws prior to entering the war. He is portrayed as a coward, not able to be his own person, or to follow suit.

1) During the beginning of the story, Holden was interpreted as a rebel who never cared about anything. He did drugs and he didn't do so well in his studies. In fact, he had to be suspended from his schools several times. However, he possessed a good heart. Before his brother's death, he was taught many good things. They were close and they did everything together. However, when he died, Holden had no one to turn to. So, he had to face the world on his own. But, with what his brother taught him, he was able to face the challenges that he encountered. Although he seemed like a tough person, he had a soft heart underneath. For example, when he wanted to call Phoebe and Jane, he decided not to because he might bother them. In addition, he reminisced over Phoebe's good qualities. So, overall, he had to learn to deal with life's challenges on his own and most of the time, he was able to get out of his troubles and choose the right direction.
2) A hero is not the typical storybook hero who saves everyone's lives. Rather, a hero is someone who is able to make a huge impact on a group of people. He is able to influence others with the good qualities that he possesses. Although they are imperfect, they manage to make the right decisions in life. In simpler terms, an all around good person.
3) We believe that Holden is the anti-hero because he is not the best of all people. He was a rebel who didn't give a care about school. There were times when he never went home and he would stay past bedtime hours. He smoked and he constantly got suspended from school. However, in the novel, he has many flashbacks and he recalls all of the memories that really played a big part in his life. He told stories about the people whom he appreciated and the most memorable experiences that he encountered. Beneath his toughness, the book gives insight into the caring personality that he hides.

1. Describe the hero's journey
A hero's journey is simpily saving people in need of help and the woman he loves. Although being a hero involves alot of diffulties and sacrifices. By being the hero, not only do they put themselves in danger but also the ones they love.
2. Descibe the attributes of a hero.
A hero has to have a positive point of view and sees beyond the materialistic things that normal people think about. They have alot of courage and would sacrifice themselves for the people they love or just reagular "citizens". Heros can make mistakes but they learn from them and they always do the right thing. No matter what their desires are or what they want in life, the people around them are more important. Normally, they are the people that someone can look up to.
3. Assess the protagonist of your novel as a hero OR an "anti-hero"
Our group belives that Holden is an anti hero. The reason for this is that he falls into peer pressure and doesnt do the right things. He smokes, drinks, thinks about sex alot, and he is just not that heroic. Holden runs into problems like every other teenager and his perspective on life is rather negative than positive. Towards the end however, he starts to be more optimistic. We could also see that behind the "tough guy" image, he is genuinely a good charcter but like many teenagers, he feels lonely. He treats his little sister so well and you can tell that he loves her very much. He goes up to her school and sends her a note saying that he is leaving home but still wants to meet up. He "walks" her to the zoo knowing she would follow and just takes her to the park and buys her a ride just to watch her be happy. He ends up making the right decision though and goes home so he can attend school in the fall.
